DAVENPORT, Iowa – Sept. 24, 2025 – If you travel on westbound Interstate 80 to reach West Branch (exit 254) you need to be aware of an upcoming construction project that may slow down your trip, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Iowa DOT Davenport construction office.
Starting on Sunday night, Sept. 28, weather permitting, crews will be closing the westbound I-80 entrance and exit ramps at the West Branch interchange (exit 254), to place the final lift of paving on the mainline and ramps. This work is part of the I-80 widening project between Iowa City and West Branch.
During this closure, you will follow a marked detour utilizing the adjacent I-80 interchanges at Garfield Avenue (exit 259) and Herbert Hoover Highway (exit 249). The westbound I-80 ramps are expected to reopen the following week, weather permitting.
For the westbound I-80 exit ramp closure, you will continue traveling westbound past Exit 254 and leave I-80 at the Herbert Hoover Highway (exit 249). You will then use the third roundabout exit to get onto westbound Herbert Hoover Highway and then use the third roundabout exit to get onto eastbound I-80 where you will be able to leave I-80 at Exit 254.
If you want to use the westbound I-80 entrance ramp you will enter eastbound I-80 at Exit 254 and then travel east to Garfield Avenue (exit 259), turn left, and then use the westbound I-80 entrance ramp to resume travel on westbound I-80.
The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
