SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Aug. 19, 2025 – In early August, crews closed the right lane of southbound Interstate 29 so flooding repair work could be done to the pavement foundations and the riverbank along the Big Sioux River. The project also includes repaving the bike trail adjacent to I-29 leading to Riverside Park that has been closed since last year’s historic flooding.
The Iowa Department of Transportation’s (DOT) District 3 office reminds the public to stay off the closed I-29 bike trail. Bike riders have been seen riding along the closed portions of the bike trail which is an extremely unsafe situation due to bank slides as well as trucks and heavy equipment accessing the project site. The public is reminded that being on the closed portion of the trail is trespassing and penalties may result in 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
The construction project is expected to be completed in approximately two months, weather permitting. You can see the work area and project progress on the Iowa DOT’s website at 511ia.org.
The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
