Those who wish to provide classroom instruction must first obtain a full endorsement (“5-12 Driver & Safety Education”) on an Iowa teaching license (Iowa Code Section 321.178).

Those who wish to provide only behind-the-wheel (BTW) instruction must obtain both certification from the Iowa Department of Transportation (“Behind-the-Wheel Certificate”) and authorization from the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners (“Behind the Wheel Driving Instructor Authorization”). (Iowa Code Section 321.178).

Course work must be coordinated with the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners.
