Section 4187.  Materials for Sign Support Structures

 

4187.01     general requirements.

Furnish materials for aluminum alloy or galvanized steel sign support structures meeting the following requirements:

 

A.    Materials for Aluminum Alloy Superstructures.

 

1.     Extruded Tubes.

Apply ASTM B 221, Alloy 6061-T6.

 

2.     Aluminum Plate.

Apply ASTM B 209 B, Alloy 6061-T6.

 

3.     Aluminum Casting Components.

a.     Apply ASTM B 26, Alloy 356.0-T7, for components in which welding is involved.

b.     Apply ASTM B 26, Alloy B 514.0 Temper F, for handrail pipe fittings.

c.     Apply ASTM B 26, Alloy 356.0-T7, or Alloy B 443.0 Temper F, to all other aluminum castings.

 

4.     Aluminum Structural Shapes.

Apply ASTM B 308, Alloy 6061-T6.

 

5.     Aluminum Catwalk Gratings.

a.     Longitudinal (Bearing) Elements.

Apply ASTM B 221, Alloy 6061-T6. Other aluminum alloys will be considered for approval.

b.     Transverse (Cross) Elements.

Apply ASTM B 221, Alloy 6063-T5. Other aluminum alloys will be considered for approval.

 

6.     Aluminum Pipe.

Apply ASTM B 241, Alloy 6063-T5.

 

7.     Aluminum Weld Wire for Welding Electrodes.

Use AWS A5.10 electrode ER5356 or ER5556 when welding aluminum alloy 6061.

 

B.    Materials for Galvanized Steel Superstructures.

Use the type and quality specified in the contract documents.

 

C.    Fasteners for Aluminum Alloy and Galvanized Steel Superstructures and Anchor Bolts.

 

1.     Fasteners for Aluminum Superstructures.

a.     Stainless Steel Bolts and Studs.

1)    Use the size specified in the contract documents.

2)    Comply with ASTM A 320 Class 1 Grade B8, Class 1A Grade B8A, or Class 2 Grade B8; or ASTM F 593 Group 1 Alloy 304 or 304L, Group 2 Alloy 316 or 316L, or Group 3 Alloy 321 or 347 meeting Condition A, CW1 or CW2.

3)    Use hexagonal bolt heads. Threads are to comply with ANSI/ASME B1.1 for UNC thread series, Class 2A tolerance. Use the stress area to compute the tensile strength.

b.     Stainless Steel Nuts and Jam Nuts.

1)    Use the size specified in the contract documents.

2)    Comply with ASTM A 194 Grade 8, 8A, 8C, 8CA, 8M, 8MA, 8T, or 8TA; or ASTM F 594 Group 1 Alloy 304 or 304L, Group 2 Alloy 316 or 316L, or Group 3 Alloy 321 or 347 meeting Condition A, CW1 or CW2 Use same alloy properties (i.e. group, alloy, class and condition) as those of the bolts specified.

3)    Use hexagonal nuts and jam nuts. Threads are to comply with ANSI/ASME B 1.1 for UNC thread series, Class 2B tolerance.

4)    Unless otherwise specified, use dimensions in accordance with the requirements of ANSI/ASME B 18.22.2. 

c.     Stainless Steel Washers.

1)    Comply with ANSI B18.22.1 for the bolts specified.

2)    The Engineer may approve washers with dimensions other than those specified.

3)    Meet requirements of ASTM A 240. Use same alloy properties (i.e. group, alloy, class and condition) as those of the bolts specified.

d.     Stainless Steel U-Bolts.

1)    Use the size specified in the contract documents.

2)    Comply with ASTM A 320, Class 1A Grade B8, Class 1A Grade B8A, or Class 2 Grade B8; or ASTM F 593 Group 1 Alloy 304 or 304L, Group 2 Alloy 316 or 316L, or Group 3 Alloy 321 or 347 meeting Condition A, CW1 or CW2.

3)    Threads shall comply with ANSI/ASME B 1.1 for UNC thread series, Class 2A tolerance.

4)    Use nuts as specified in Article 4187.01, C.1.b.

5)    Use washers as specified in Article 4187.01, C.1.c.

 

2.   Fasteners for Galvanized Steel Superstructures.

a.     Galvanized Steel High Strength Bolts.

1)    Use size specified in the contract documents.

2)    Galvanize according to requirements of ASTM B 695, Class 55 Type 1 or ASTM F 2329 with zinc bath temperature limited to 850°F.

3)    Bolts shall be:

·         ASTM F 3125 Grade A 325 Type 1 / A 325-T Type 1 or

·         ASTM A 449 Type 1 with Ro-cap testing required pursuant to Articles 2408.03, S and 4153.06.

4)    Threads are to comply with ANSI/ASME B 1.1 for UNC thread series, Class 2A tolerance.

b.     Galvanized Steel Nuts and Jam Nuts.

1)    Use size specified in the contract documents.

2)    Galvanize according to the requirements of ASTM B 695, Class 55 Type 1 or ASTM F 2329 with zinc bath temperature limited to 850°F.

3)    Regular nuts shall be ASTM A 563 Grade DH heavy hex.

4)    Jam nuts shall be ASTM A 563 Grade DH heavy hex.

5)    Threads are to comply with ANSI/ASME B 1.1 for UNC thread series, Class 2B tolerance.

c.     Galvanized Steel Washers.

1)    Comply with ANSI B18.22.1 for the bolts specified.

2)    Galvanize according to the requirements of ASTM B 695, Class 55 Type 1 or ASTM F 2329 with zinc bath temperature limited to 850°F.

3)    Washers shall be ASTM F 436 Type 1.

d.     Galvanized Steel U-Bolts. 

1)    Use size specified in the contract documents.

2)    Galvanize according to the requirements of ASTM B 695, Class 55 Type 1 or ASTM F 2329 with zinc bath temperature limited to 850°F.

3)    U-bolts shall be ASTM A 449 Type 1, ASTM A 307 Grade B or ASTM F 1554, Grade 36 or 55.

4)    Threads are to comply with ANSI/ASME B 1.1 for UNC thread series, Class 2A tolerance.

5)    Bend and thread U-bolts prior to galvanizing.

6)    Use nuts as specified in Article 4187.01, C, 2, b.

7)    Use washers as specified in Article 4187.01, C, 2, c.

e.    Stainless Steel U-Bolts.

1)   Use size specified in the contract documents.

2)   Comply with ASTM A 320 Class 1 Grade B8, Class 1A Grade B8A, or Class 2 Grade B8; or ASTM F 593 Group 1 Alloy 304 or 304L, Group 2 Alloy 316 or 316L, or Group 3 Alloy 321 or 347 meeting Condition A, CW1 or CW2.

3)    Threads are to comply with ANSI/ASME B 1.1 for UNC thread series, Class 2A tolerance.

4)    Use nuts as specified in Article 4187.01, C, 1, b.

5)    Use washers as specified in Article 4187.01, C, 1, c.

 

 3.    Anchor Bolts, Nuts, and Washers.

Furnish each anchor bolt with one leveling nut, one anchoring nut, and one jam nut on the exposed end and one of the following on the embedded end if the anchor bolt is straight: nut, nut and plate, or nut and anchor bolt assembly ring plate. Use anchor bolts, nuts, and washers that comply with Materials I.M. 453.08. Meet the following requirements:

a.     Anchor Bolts.

1)    Use full-length galvanized bolts.

2)    Comply with either ASTM F 1554, Grade 55, S1; or Grade 105, S4 (-20ºF).

3)    Grade 55 anchor bolts may be straight or include a 90 degree bend.

4)    Grade 105 anchor bolts shall be straight.

5)    Threads are to comply with ANSI/ASME B1.1 for UNC thread series, Class 2A tolerance.

6)    The end of each anchor bolt intended to project from the concrete is to be color coded to identify the grade.

7)    Do not bend or weld anchor bolts.

b.     Nuts.

1)    Comply with ASTM A 563, Grade DH or ASTM A 194.

2)    Use heavy hex.

3)   Use ANSI/ASME B1.1 for UNC thread series, Class 2B tolerance.

4)    Nuts may be over-tapped according to the allowance requirements of ASTM A 563.

5)    Refer to Articles 2522.03, H, 2, b through h for tightening procedure and requirements.

c.     Washers.

Comply with ASTM F 436 Type 1.

d.   Galvanizing.

Galvanize entire anchor bolt assembly consisting of anchor bolts, nuts, and washers (and plates or anchor bolt assembly ring plate, if used) according to the requirements of ASTM B 695, Class 55 Type 1 or ASTM F 2329 with zinc bath temperature limited to 850°F. Galvanize entire assembly by the same zinc-coating process, with no mixed processes in a lot of fastener assemblies.

 

D.    Material for Substructure.

 

1.     Concrete Footings.

Use Class C concrete meeting applicable requirements of Section 2403.

 

2.     Reinforcing Steel.

Apply Section 4151.

 

E.    Conduit.

 

1.     Substructure.

Use one of the following:

·         Rigid steel conduit meeting the requirements of Article 4185.10, B,

·         Rigid plastic conduit meeting the requirements of Article 4185.10, D, or

·         Bituminized fiber conduit meeting the requirements of FZS W-C-581, Type II.

 

2.     Superstructure.

a.     Use rigid steel conduit meeting the requirements of Article 4185.10, B, when the structure is fabricated from steel.

b.     Use aluminum alloy conduit when the structure is fabricated from aluminum alloy.
