U.S. 20 bridge awards

2002 FHWA Environmental Quality Award

The efforts to protect the bald eagles’ roosting site near the Iowa River and mussels in the river, as well as the efforts to preserve the river, brought attention from many organizations, including the Federal Highway Administration, which presented the Administrator’s Environmental Quality Award to the Iowa Department of Transportation in September 2002.

The award citation noted that this bridge project provided an important example to show that professionals in transportation- and environment-related fields could work together to advance transportation opportunities in an environmentally sensitive way. 1

2005 NPHQ National Achievement Award

The National Partnership for Highway Quality, a partnership of private and public transportation leaders, presented the Iowa Department of Transportation and its partners with their highest honor for the design and construction of the U.S. 20 bridge. Citing the “innovative thinking, quality design and performance, and cost-effective practices,” the NPHQ selected the project from a group of candidates that represented all areas of the United States. 2
