Organizational Structure: DART is governed by a nine-member commission representing seven geographic regions of Polk County appointed by the cities served, plus two appointments by the Polk County Board of Supervisors. The organization is administered by a general manager with a staff of 225 employees.
Special Features/Highlights: DART is the first Regional Transit Authority created under state legislation approved in 2005. DART has independent property tax levying authority within all of Polk County and the city boundaries of all 19 communities in Polk County. DART is the largest system in the state providing over 15,000 trips per day with a fleet of approximately 145 buses. DART is expanding services throughout its service area, introducing more express, shuttle, and weekend service hours. DART works closely with all regional transportation planning initiatives including the Greater Des Moines Partnership’s Transit 2030 Committee and its own Greater Des Moines Rapid Transit Study. DART also provides coordinated paratransit services to meet its ADA obligations as well as contract service provision for Polk County Social Services and more than 40 other smaller social service organizations.. Vanpool services are available for Des Moines area employees commuting into and out of the DART service area, and a carpool matching service is provided for all of central Iowa. DART has one of the largest Vanpool programs in the Midwest with over 100 vans.
Days/Hours of Operation: Fixed Route, Monday-Friday, 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Sunday (as of October 14, 2007), 7 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Paratransit ADA service operates during the same hours as Fixed Route Services. Certain Paratransit Contract Services operate 7 days/weeks, all hours; RideShare office, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Fares Structure: Fixed Route: $1.75 Base, $2.00 Express, $3.50 On-Call/Dial-A-Ride, $48 Monthly Pass, $16 Weekly Pass; Paratransit ADA Service: $3.00 Base; Paratransit Contract Service: Free through Polk County, if eligible - Call 515-286-3484; RideShare office: fare dependent on miles and quantity of riders within each van.
