Aviation

Iowa has 113 publicly owned airports—103 general aviation airports and 10 commercial service airports serving local, regional and national markets and play an important role in attracting business and industry to the state. Although the state of Iowa does not own any of these airports, the Office of Systems Planning is involved in preparing and publishing a number of aviation reports and plans that help guide investment decisions affecting these airports.

The Aviation System Plan determines the priorities for airport infrastructure improvement projects. The focus of this plan is to support an effective system of regional general aviation and commercial service airports while maintaining efficient service and safety at all airports. The plan designates a number of general aviation airports as "regional" airports based on specific criteria. It also provides a method of funding airport improvement projects that enhance economic development such as by assisting communities to attract new industry or to help expand and/or retain existing industry in Iowa.

The Airport Sufficiency Report provides an evaluation of the condition of the existing airport runways, taxiways and aircraft parking areas. Both the Aviation System Plan and Airport Sufficiency Report are used to guide investment decisions.
