Background and History
The catch phrase "Avenue of the Saints", which denotes a four-lane highway that stretches from St. Louis, Mo. to St. Paul, Minn., was coined in 1985 by the late Ernie Hayes, a Mount Pleasant businessman, along with New Hampton banker Robert Rigler and former Iowa DOT Director Warren Dunham. The phrase was conceived at a time when the men and others were seeking a catchy name to help promote or brand the multi-state road-building project as they marketed the concept to local, state and federal officials.
The mark was first used in the state of Iowa on Aug. 28, 1987 and registered with the State of Iowa Jan. 7, 2008.
On May 26, 2009, the United State Patent and Trademark Office issued a registration to the Iowa DOT for the Avenue of the Saints design and word service mark.
