Human Factors Focus Group

Iowa's first Human Factors Focus Group meeting was held June 1, 2005 at the University of Iowa. The purpose of the meeting was to bring stakeholders and interested professionals together to identify and discuss Human Factor research needs and establish priorities for future research.

Human factors research seeks to understand and explain the behavior of drivers and to determine the differences in driver capabilities, perceptions and responses to elements of vehicle, highway and environmental design.

Prior to the June 1 meeting, a good deal of human factor research has been done in Iowa and many researchers were interested, but the work was fragmented. The needs and priorities identified in the meeting will help the DOT to be sure that the most important needs are being met and that the department is spending its research dollars as wisely as possible in the human factors arena.
