IOWA RESEARCH IMPLEMENTATION

The implementation step in research is vital. A research report that sits on a shelf is of no use to the community and is a waste of time and resources.

The Iowa DOT has been moving toward stronger emphasis on implementation of research. We now require an implementation plan as part of research proposals and final reports. We have also begun to monitor the implementation process. Monitoring the implementation of research projects gives us a report card of the process of selecting and performing the research.

For implementation we're looking at four basic criteria:

1. What is the form in which the research was/is to be reported?

2. Who or what office/entity should be informed of the results?

3. What standards, specifications and/or practices will be affected and what specific changes should be made to them?

4. What institutional issues, including resource requirements, administrative rules, or regulations might need to be addressed for successful implementation?
