Intercity bus service expansions in Iowa

AMES, Iowa – Intercity bus service is being expanded in Iowa starting in 2008. Burlington Trailways is now offering a new service between Des Moines and Davenport via Grinnell and Iowa City . Jefferson Lines will be offering two new services, including a premium service for communities presently served by Jefferson Lines in central Iowa , and a new service between Mason City and Iowa City via Charles City, Waverly, Waterloo/Cedar Falls, Urbana, and Cedar Rapids.

Federal funding under the administration of the Iowa Department of Transportation is providing a portion of the funding for these new services. In December, more than $1.6 million was approved by the Iowa Transportation Commission to maintain the viability of Iowa 's intercity bus service tying smaller communities in Iowa to the nationwide intercity bus system.

In support of these services, funds were awarded for the purchase of three new 45-foot, ADA-compliant motor coaches. Also included in the program is funding of a state-of-the-art, interactive driving simulator system that will be used to train and evaluate transit drivers and driver candidates throughout the state.
