Iowa road closure update and travel advisory

AMES, Iowa – Several roads in northeast Iowa are closed due to blowing and drifting snow. The Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) is advising Iowans to take extra precautions, if traveling this evening, and to avoid travel in the counties listed below.

Blowing and drifting snow are expected, especially where significant new snow has fallen. With darkness and in open areas, visibility will be very limited. Air temperatures will be in the teens and wind chill levels below zero, making it dangerous should you become stranded.

Road closures
The following roads are currently closed due to drifting and low visibility.

  1. Buchanan County - Iowa 150, south of Independence
  2. Clayton and Dubuque counties - U.S. 52, north from Luxemburg in Dubuque County to Guttenberg in Clayton County
  3. Delaware County - Iowa 13, north of Manchester
  4. Delaware County - Iowa 38, north from just north of U.S. 20 to Iowa 3
  5. Delaware and Dubuque counties - Iowa 3, west from Luxemburg in Dubuque County to Colesburg in Delaware County
  6. Dubuque County - U.S. 52, west from north of Dubuque to Luxemburg
  7. Dubuque County - Iowa 136, north from Dyersville to Luxemburg

If you must travel this evening, consider the following.

  1. Pack a winter survival kit with enough supplies for all passengers.
  2. Slow down, especially if visibility is limited.
  3. Put plenty of room between your vehicle and the others sharing the roadway.
  4. Stay on main roads; avoid back road shortcuts.
  5. If conditions deteriorate, look for a safe place to stay, such as a rest area, truck stop, motel or other nearby travel service.
  6. If you do become stranded, call 911 and remain with your vehicle until help arrives. Do not attempt to walk in the freezing temperatures.

Where conditions permit, Iowa DOT road crews will be working throughout the night to restore and maintain normal winter driving conditions. Iowa DOT motor vehicle enforcement officers will be helping prevent travelers from entering the closed roadways.

The department will be closely monitoring road conditions in partnership with the Iowa State Patrol and issuing updated travel advisories as needed.
