Iowa Transportation Commission approves 2008 aviation programs
AMES, Iowa – The Iowa Transportation Commission today approved nearly $4 million for the 2008 State Aviation Program.
Vertical infrastructure programs will provide $2.3 million for projects at all eight commercial service airports and 12 general aviation airports around Iowa. These programs provide funding for the maintenance and development of airport facilities, such as terminal buildings, maintenance facilities and aviation hangars.
The Airport Improvement Program (AIP), funded with revenues from aircraft registration fees and aviation fuel taxes, will fund airfield and security projects totaling $1.1 million at 18 general aviation airports. It will also fund $545,000 for statewide safety and development programs. The AIP program provides funding that supports safe flight operations within the state's air transportation system and enhances the safety, operation and accessibility of airports in Iowa.

Aviation safety and development programs ($545,000)
Funding for aviation safety and development programs supports:
Maintenance of the statewide Aviation Weather Observing System (AWOS), AWOS provides a network of aviation weather reporting stations at 39 airports in Iowa , and real-time ground-to-air radio weather broadcasts for pilots. AWOS information is also available via phone and Internet broadcasts and is used by forecasters with the National Weather Service.
The Runway Marking Program, which provides safety-critical runway and taxiway markings at publicly owned airports, and key operational information to pilots on the ground and from the air.
The Windsock Program, which provides valuable information to pilots regarding wind direction and speed prior to takeoff and landing.
Matching funds for federally funded statewide projects including aeronautical surveys for development of satellite-based instrument approaches and pavement inspections at airports.
An educational program to implement new land use guidelines around public airports.
Air service development to help maintain and enhance passenger air service in Iowa.
An airport wildlife mitigation program.
Emergency operational repairs at publicly owned airports.
