2007-2011 Iowa Transportation Improvement Program approved today

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa Transportation Commission today approved the 2007-2011 Iowa Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) setting the five-year priorities for the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT).

The Iowa Transportation Commission and the DOT have developed this five-year program to inform Iowans of planned investments in our state's transportation system. Iowa 's transportation system is multi-modal and, as such, the TIP includes investments in aviation, transit, railroads, trails and highways.

A major component of the five-year program is the highway portion. The total amount of federal and state funds, including project-specific federal funding, forecast to be available for highway right-of-way acquisition and construction for the FY 2007 to 2011 program is $2 billion.

Although the first two years of the program are essentially balanced, the projected total costs of the approved five-year program exceed currently anticipated revenues by $90 million, or about 4 percent across the entire five-year program. If additional funding does not become available during the life of this program, or if there is further erosion of buying power or federal and state funding levels, adjustments to the program will be required. The Iowa Transportation Commission intends to approve the next five-year program (FY 2008-2012) by July 1, 2007, and will address any continuing shortfall between program costs and revenues at that time.

The highway program includes a significant annual investment in preservation of the existing primary system, including work on major interstate reconstruction in Council Bluffs , Sioux City and Iowa City . In addition to the dozens of system preservation projects approved in the five-year TIP, the following additional improvements or capacity projects are included:
