Iowa Transportation Commission approves 2007 aviation programs

AMES , Iowa – The Iowa Transportation Commission today approved Iowa 's $3-million 2007 State Aviation Program. The program will provide nearly $2.4 million for vertical infrastructure projects at eight commercial service airports and 12 general aviation airports in Iowa . An additional $688,000 will provide funding for Airport Improvement Program projects, including: airfield and security projects at 10 general aviation airports; aviation safety programs; and planning studies. (See three charts listing the projects at the end of this release.)

Aviation funding for safety programs and planning studies supports:

•  maintenance of the statewide Aviation Weather and Observing System (AWOS); AWOS provides a network of aviation weather reporting stations at 38 airports in Iowa and real-time ground-to-air radio weather broadcasts for pilots; AWOS information is also available via phone and Internet broadcasts, and is used by a forecaster with the National Weather Service;

•  the Runway Marking Program, which provides safety critical runway and taxiway markings at publicly owned airports that provide key operational information to pilots on the ground and from the air;

•  the Windsock Program, which assists with the purchasing of very basic safety tools that provide valuable information to pilots regarding wind direction and speed prior to takeoff and landing;

•  match for the federally funded statewide studies that will include studies on the economic impact of Iowa 's air transportation system, obstruction analysis of runway approaches and pavement inspections at airports eligible for federal funding.

•  a wildlife mitigation program; and

•  emergency operational repairs at publicly owned airports.
