Airport Provides Weather Conditions

Current weather conditions are now available to the general public through the Automated Weather Observation Station (AWOS) at the Sheldon Regional Airport.

The AWOS system provides temperature, dew point, barometric pressure, wind direction, wind speed, peak gusts, visibility, and cloud height. AWOS is part of a statewide aviation weather reporting system maintained by the Iowa Department of Transportation's Office of Aviation.

AWOS systems in Iowa are part of a state and national weather-reporting network providing weather information for aviation and meteorological uses. It is the same weather data that is used by weather sources such as the National Weather Service and The Weather Channel.

Current weather conditions at the airport are available to the public on a continuous broadcast by calling 712-324-5159, or on the Iowa Department of Transportation's WeatherView web site at www.dotweatherview.com .

According to Michelle McEnany, Director of the Iowa DOT's Office of Aviation, “The AWOS system has been tremendously successful in providing ground to air radio weather broadcasts for pilots. With phone and Internet, the general public can also access this real-time weather information. It is one more way that general aviation airports are able to serve their communities.”
