Iowa airports land record funding for 2005
AMES , Iowa – Dec. 13, 2005 – A federal transportation appropriations bill that included funding for Iowa's airports was passed by Congress and signed by the President Nov. 30. The bill provides essential federal Airport Improvement Program (AIP) funding and continued funding for the Essential Air Service (EAS) program that supports passenger air service at airports in Burlington , Fort Dodge, and Mason City.
Iowa airports received $53 million in AIP grants in 2005 for airport rehabilitation and development projects (see table). In Iowa , 77 of the state's 111 publicly owned airports are eligible for federal funding.
Funding for the grants is provided through aviation-generated user fees, such as passenger and facility fees, cargo taxes, and fuel taxes. AIP funds are primarily allocated to airfield projects involving runway and taxiway construction, safety items, and planning studies.
According to Michelle McEnany, director of the Iowa Department of Transportation's Office of Aviation, “There are more than 1.3 million aircraft operations annually in Iowa and more than 3 million passengers are processed annually through Iowa 's commercial service airports. Airports are critical transportation and economic resources to the state and communities throughout Iowa . This level of funding goes a long way in positioning our airports to meet the needs of businesses, residents and visitors to our state.”
More information on aviation in Iowa is available on the Iowa DOT's Office of Aviation Web site at iawings.com.
