Aviation art contest winners announced

AMES, Iowa  - The Iowa Department of Transportation’s Office of Aviation has announced the state winners for the 2005 International Aviation Art Contest. The winning piece of artwork in each category has been forwarded to Washington, D.C., to compete at the national level.

The concept of this year’s competition was to design an airshow poster using the theme  “More than 100 years of Human Flight.” The goal of the contest is to encourage children to become more familiar with and participate in aeronautics, engineering and science.

There are three age categories for judging. Following are the winners for each category:

Ages 6-9
First – Christopher Albright, Milford, IA
Second – Zachary Gordon, Mediapolis, IA
Third – Olivia Albright, Milford, IA

Ages 10-13
First – Jonathan Church, Cedar Rapids, IA
Second – Simeon Mahoney, Mason City, IA
Third – Jeralyn Westercamp, Cedar Rapids, IA

Ages 14-17
First – Bryan Church, Cedar Rapids

The Office of Aviation wishes to thank all those who submitted artwork, and congratulate and wish the winners good luck in the national competition.

Sponsors of the 2005 International Aviation Art Contest are the National Aeronautic Association, National Association of State Aviation Officials, National Aeronautics and Space administration, and Federal Aviation Administration, in cooperation with the Federation Aeronautique Internationale.
