DOT urges use of winter driving techniques this weekend AMES, Iowa – With the potential for Iowa’s first
significant snowfall and very windy conditions predicted for Sunday into Monday,
Iowa Department of Transportation officials advise motorists to brush up on
winter driving techniques. First and foremost when planning a trip during a winter weather event is to evaluate the necessity of the trip. If you don’t absolutely need to be out, stay home. If your trip cannot be postponed, pay attention to weather forecasts and weather information. · Check local radio and television reports for breaking information. · Several Web-based resources are available including the DOT’s dotweatherview.com, 511ia.org and iowaroadconditions.org. · Another great tool for planning ahead is to phone 511. This can also be done from a mobile phone to check for changes in weather conditions while on your trip. The weather and other traffic conditions may test your driving skills and patience. · Stop using cruise control when roadway surfaces are slippery. · Wear seat belts. · Reduce
speeds for the conditions and allow extra time to get to your destination. · Turn on your lights to see and be seen. · Allow distance between your vehicle and others on the roadway, and allow extra distance when stopping. · Drive defensively as less experienced drivers may be experiencing snowy roads for the first time. Use caution when driving behind a snowplow. This equipment operates at much slower speeds than regular traffic. Use caution when passing a plow, as the blade sometimes extends into the next lane. Be aware that in a significant snowfall, the plow may cause a cloud of snow behind and to the side of the equipment. # |
