Iowa flag to fly as part of 50 Flags to Kitty Hawk AMES, Iowa – The Iowa Department of Transportation’s Office of Aviation has announced that Shane Vande Voort of Pella has been chosen by the Experimental Aircraft Association to fly an Iowa state flag to Kitty Hawk, NC, during the “50 Flags to Kitty Hawk” celebration commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Wright brothers’ first flight. Vande Voort, a 10-year pilot, is the Pella airport manager. His co-pilot on the trip will be his father, Larry, who is a flight instructor and manager of the Sully airport. The Vande Voorts estimate the 869 nautical mile journey will take them about 10 hours in their 1947 Cessna 120. The father/son team plans to leave Pella on June 23 carrying an official state flag that flew over the statehouse June 4. The flag will become part of a permanent display on the Wright Memorial Grounds. The Office of Aviation is working in partnership with the National Park Service and the Experimental Aircraft Association to make 2003 an exciting celebration of the Centennial of Flight.
