Aviation art contest winners announced

AMES, Iowa - The Iowa Department of Transportation’s Office of Aviation has announced the state winners for the 2003 International Aviation Art Contest. The winning piece of artwork in each category has been forwarded to Washington, D.C., to compete at the national level.

The theme of this year’s contest is “100 Years of Powered Flight” in celebration of the Wright brothers’ first flight Dec. 17, 1903, at Kitty Hawk. The goal of the contest is to encourage children to become more familiar with and participate in aeronautics, engineering and science.

There are three age categories for judging. Following are the winners for each category:

Ages 6-9
First - Kaitlin Church, Cedar Rapids
Second - Cheryl Lee Creery, Cedar Falls
Third - Joshua Hostetler, Bondurant

Ages 10-13
First – Aaron Heise, Iowa City
Second – Jonathan Church, Cedar Rapids
Third – Colton Penning, Radcliffe

Ages 14-17
First – Aaron Church, Cedar Rapids
Second – Bryan Church, Cedar Rapids
Third - Shelby Jacob, Des Moines

The Office of Aviation wishes to thank all those who submitted artwork, and congratulate and wish the winners good luck in the national competition.

Sponsors of the 2003 International Aviation Art Contest are the National Aeronautic Association, National Association of State Aviation Officials, National Aeronautics and Space administration, and Federal Aviation Administration, in cooperation with the Federation Aeronautique Internationale.
