DOT's Office of Aviation sponsors annual art contest AMES, Iowa -
The Iowa Department of Transportation's Office of Aviation is again sponsoring
the International Aviation Art Contest for young people in Iowa. The theme of
this year’s contest is “100 Years of Powered Flight,” in celebration of
the Wright Brothers’ first powered flight at Kitty Hawk, NC, on December 17,
1903. Artwork will be judged, at least in part, for its creative use of this
theme. The purpose of the art contest is to encourage young people to become
more familiar with and participate in aeronautics, engineering and science. The contest competition is
judged in three age groups: 6-9, 10-13 and 14-17. The age categories are
determined by the contestants’ ages on Dec. 31, 2002. The best three entries
in each category will be selected as state winners. State winners will then
compete on the national level. The nine national winners will receive
certificates, ribbons and framed photos of their artwork. The international
awards will be gold, silver and bronze medals. State winners will receive
certificates. The artwork of the national
winners in each age group will be forwarded for international judging by the
Federation Aeronautique Internationale. Sponsors of
the 2002 International Aviation Art Contest are the National Aeronautic
Association, National Association of State Aviation Officials, Federal Aviation
Administration, and Federation Aeronautique Internationale. Contest
information and registration forms can be accessed at www.iawings.com.
