GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS MAINTAINER - Program Planner 1

Salary Range: $32,300 - $47,800
This position has lead responsibility for maintenance of the secondary road data in the Geographic Information Management System (GIMS).
GIMS is a GIS database with over 300,000 records depicting public
highway, structure & rail crossing information in Iowa. Maintenance of this system is done through manipulation of business data items
through an interface with an Oracle database integrated with MicroStation. Currently this system is being redesigned and will utilize
GeoMedia to perform the maintenance of the system which is also the application used to manipulate the Linear Referencing System (LRS).
This position also assists with the maintenance of the LRS. The LRS consists of data needed to specify linear reference locations that
DOT applies in many of its databases and create the ability to integrate the disparate databases throughout the agency. These data
include milepost, literal description, x,y coordinates, and stationing. The LRS provides a consistent and uniform system to reference
features or occurrences along Iowa roads and allows various offices within the DOT to efficiently exchange spatially referenced data.
This position requires a variety of skills including excellent written and verbal communication skills,
the ability to effectively read and interpret complex material related to data
analysis and mapping products, accurately enter and analyze data, digitize line work for roadway centerlines and utilize word
processing and spreadsheet software.
Requires graduation from an accredited college or university or an equivalent combination of education and
experience equal to four years of economic, environmental, social, or health care program planning work (at the
local, regional, state, or national level). In addition the applicant must have twelve semester hours of
coursework or 6 months of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) experience.
