Brand Guidelines

For questions about proper usage of the Iowa DOT logo, or to obtain a logo file format not found below, please email: dot-newsgroup@dot.iowa.gov.

The Iowa DOTís logo is one of its most valuable assets if used properly and consistently in identifying the department. It unites the department, its divisions and offices, and service provided under one global umbrella. Following the brand guidelines set forth will make it easy for you to represent the Iowa DOT in the most clear and professional manner and protect yourself from any liability related to copyright infringement.

Donít use the Iowa DOTís name, logos, or graphics

  • In, as or part of your own business name, product name, domain name, or in the name of your service.
  • To identify products or services that are not associated closely with the Iowa DOT.
  • In a manner likely to cause confusion.
  • In a manner that directly or indirectly expresses or implies Iowa DOT sponsorship, affiliation, certification, approval or endorsement in relation to your own activities, products and services that are separate from or unrelated to the Iowa DOT, unless you have written permission to do so.
  • In connection with any obscene or pornographic materials.
  • In any way that is disparaging, defamatory or libelous to the Iowa DOT, any of its products or services, or any person or entity.

Logo use

Do:

  • Use these marks in a readable size
  • Maintain empty space equal to at least half the height of the logo on all sides
  • Keep them straight and free of filters and effects
  • Use a version of the logo that provides the most contrast against your background

Don't:

  • Rotate these marks
  • Alter their proportions or colors
  • Obstruct them
  • Add extraneous effects
  • Attempt to recreate the logo

Logo Configurations

There are two approved configurations of the Iowa DOT logo: horizontal and rectangular. Horizontal is the preferred choice. The rectangular configuration may be used in circumstances where it is impractical to use the preferred horizontal version.

The mark (three-part circle) should never be used alone, without additional information that identifies the Iowa DOT.

Know which file type to use

Each zip file containing the different configurations of the logo contains three file types: EPS, JPEG and PNG.

EPS (Encapsulated PostScript file) is a vector format. It can be re-sized without losing image quality. It is the best choice for anything professionally or screen printed.

JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is a raster file widely supported and works in almost any program. It is best used in common things like invoices, page layouts, or letterheads. Please use this file type for Microsoft Word.

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a web-based file that does not lose quality when compressed. PNG files are best used for the web or computer-based designs and maintain a transparent background.
