I-29 Improvement Project

Segment 3: North Corridor

The Segment 3 study area is the northern most portion of I-29 in Sioux City. The project area begins just west of the Hamilton Boulevard interchange and continues west to the Big Sioux River at the South Dakota state line. The project area encompasses the existing Iowa 12/Riverside Boulevard interchange.

Proposed Segment 3 improvements are anticipated to include upgrading mainline I-29 from four lanes to six lanes and upgrading the existing Iowa 12/Riverside Boulevard interchange to a standard diamond configuration.

A categorical exclusion will be prepared discussing the environmental constraints within the Segment 3 study area. Categorical exclusions are a category of actions that do not individually or cumulatively have a significant effect on the environment, and for which neither an environmental assessment nor an environmental impact statement is required.

Preliminary design of Segment 3 is underway. Timing of improvements will be dependent on funding availability, as well as staging of improvements in other segments of the I-29 reconstruction project. However, construction of Segment 3 improvements is anticipated to begin ahead of segments 1 and 2.
