SAFETY GRATES FOR

CONCRETE BOX CULVERS


 

GENERAL

Safety grates are designed to provide a suitable safety guard for the exposed end of the box culverts.  Approved producers and fabricators are listed in the Materials Approved Products Listing Enterprise (MAPLE).

 

REQUIREMENTS FOR SAFETY GRATES

 

  1. Safety grates shall comply with the requirements of the Design Standard DR-503.

 

  1. All products of steel and iron shall meet the requirements of IM 107, Buy America.

 

SOURCE APPROVAL

Requests for source approval shall be made to the Office of Construction and Materials. Approval will be based on evaluation of the producers quality control program and weld procedures.

 

ACCEPTANCE

Acceptance of safety grates shall be based on shop drawings and approved fabricators with a certification statement.  Approved Fabricators are listed in Appendix A of this IM.

 

CERTIFICATION DOCUMENTS

 

The producer of certified safety grates units shall furnish, on each shipment day, a certified bill of materials or invoice which identifies the county, project number, contractor, and number of pieces. The certification of compliance shall be signed by a designated, responsible company representative and shall be stated as follows:

 

"The materials itemized in this shipment are certified to be in compliance with the applicable AASHTO and/or ASTM requirements and Iowa Department of Transportation Standard Plans and Specifications, IMs and meet the Buy America requirements as described in IM 107 for all steel, iron products and coatings."
