INSPECTION & ACCEPTANCE

ELASTOMERIC JOINT SEALS

 

GENERAL

 

Elastomeric joint seals, also known as neoprene or polychloroprene seals, are used to seal the expansion and contraction joints in bridge decks. The seals shall meet the requirements of Article 4136.03, Paragraph C.

 

ACCEPTANCE

 

Acceptance of elastomeric joint seals shall be on the basis of manufacturer and product name approval.

 

Approved manufacturers and products are listed in Appendix A.

 

MANUFACTURER AND BRAND NAME APPROVAL

 

To obtain approval, the manufacturer shall submit the following to the Iowa Department of Transportation, Office of Materials, 800 Lincoln Way, Ames, Iowa 50010:

 

1.    Product identification including brand name and product number

2.    Technical literature for the product

3.    A two-foot piece of the neoprene rubber

 

MONITOR SAMPLING AND TESTING

 

The Office of Materials may sample and test elastomeric seals to verify compliance with specifications.
