Work Zones
Work zones are a common occurrence throughout the construction season in Iowa, evidence that the state is taking good care of its transportation investments. The CBIS improvements project will involve numerous work zone areas throughout the Council Bluffs area, which will include a variety of changing conditions, such as:- Lane and ramp closures that will change traffic patterns.
- Barrier rails placed along the roadway to protect workers and motorists.
- Repainted lane lines to adjust traffic movements through the work area.
- Occasionally, water dripping off newly poured bridge decks.
For the safest trip possible, follow these safety tips.
- Slow down. Use caution when approaching work zones.
- Follow posted speed limits. Try to maintain a speed consistent with the traffic flow.
- Drive ahead. Don't just focus on the vehicle in front of you. Be aware of traffic conditions beyond, beside and behind you.
- Anticipate. Be ready to respond quickly to conditions in and around construction areas.
- Leave room. Leave adequate braking room between your vehicle and the one ahead of you. Also, keep a safe distance between your vehicle and traffic barriers, trucks, construction equipment, and workers.
- Leave yourself an out. When stopped in traffic, leave a safety zone between you and the vehicle in front of you.
- Pay attention. Avoid using your cell phone, tuning your radio, or other distractions when approaching or traveling through work zones.
- Keep your cool. Calm down and don't rush. Remember, the temporary inconvenience of construction will pay off with a greatly improved freeway. Don't let impatient or speeding motorists cause you to alter your own good driving habits!
- Expect delays.Use the CBIS Web site and other information to keep informed about construction on your route. Leave early, if necessary, to arrive at your destination on time. Consider using an alternate route that bypasses the construction zones.
