Funding programs and applications

Funding applications
Iowa's Consolidated Transit Funding Application is used by all transit agencies to apply for STA funds and federal 5310, 5311 and 5339 funds.

Funding programs
Financial support for the delivery of public transit services and planning comes from many sources. The largest element in the Iowa DOT's transit program is distribution of state and federal financial assistance for transit operations and capital improvements.

Joint participation agreement attachments
The Iowa DOT issues joint participation agreements for State Transit Assistance (STA) and each sub-recipient project that is part of an approved statewide grant from FTA. All joint participation agreements incorporate the following information by reference.

Planning requirements for submitted projects
Any transit system requesting statewide capital funds for a new transit facility or facility improvement must submit a feasibility study.

Mobility Coordinators
Mobility management coordinators serve as policy coordinators, operations service brokers and customer travel navigators. As policy coordinators, mobility managers help communities develop coordination plans, programs and policies, and build local partnerships.

Iowa Transportation Coordination Council
The Iowa Transportation Coordination Council provides statewide leadership for transportation coordination to improve the mobility of Iowans.

Office of Public Transit
Each year, an individual can achieve an average annual savings of more than $8,000 by taking public transportation instead of driving and by living with one less car.

Transit agencies
The Iowa DOT may only distribute state and federal public transit assistance to public transit systems that have been duly designated as a single administrative agency (transit system). There are 35 such public transit systems in Iowa.

Transit library resources
Materials are shipped to transit systems within five business days. The standard loan period is one month. Materials can be renewed in one month increments with approval from DOT library staff.

Transit policies
Beginning with state fiscal year 2011, the Office of Public Transit adopted the policy to require all proposals for state funded projects to follow the terms listed in the Iowa Department of Transportation Bid Requirements document.
