Kay Thede to retire from Iowa DOT

Portrait of Kay Thede - Nov. 22, 2013

After 30 years as a state employee, Kay Thede, program manager for the Office of Aviation, has announced her retirement from the Iowa Department of Transportation. Jan. 31 will be her last day on the job.

Since 2002, Thede’s responsibilities in the Office of Aviation included coordinating federal airport improvement programs in Iowa and management of the state aviation program and system plan. She has played a lead role in aviation-related land-use and zoning guidance, legislative analysis, general aviation security initiatives, and disadvantaged business enterprise (DBE) reporting.

Thede has been with the Iowa DOT since 1986. During her career with the Iowa DOT, she held several positions in the Motor Vehicle and Operations and Finance divisions. Her experience at the Iowa DOT has included work with driver safety programs, inventory management, signage, policy, and legislative issues. Prior to joining the Iowa DOT, Thede worked for the Iowa Job Service (now Iowa Workforce Development).

Thede says she looks forward to new adventures and opportunities in the next chapter of her life. On the immediate horizon, she will suffer through one more Iowa winter and finish the tax season with her second work family at H&R Block, where she has done tax preparation for the past 15 years. Then it will be on to new opportunities, spending time with grandkids, golfing, biking, attending Iowa State athletic events, and working on unfinished projects. Kay’s plans for next winter include spending plenty of time in Florida!

Office of Aviation Director Michelle Mc Enany stated, “Kay has been proactive in identifying the needs of airports and has continuously taken the initiative to develop programs to meet those needs. Her ability to work with the Federal Aviation Administration, airports, consultants, and other stakeholders in developing and following a system plan to guide aviation investment has served Iowa well. She has been a tireless advocate of airports and will be greatly missed.”

Thede says she feels fortunate to have worked with many great people throughout her career at the Iowa DOT. “The last 11 years working in the Office of Aviation has been the highlight of my career where I’ve enjoyed working with various sectors of the aviation community to enhance the safety and efficiency of the aviation system in Iowa. I would like to extend a sincere thank you to all the DOT staff, airport managers, sponsors, consultants, and FAA staff who have made my job both enjoyable and memorable.”

The program manager position will be filled and should be posted soon.

Good luck Kay!
