Iowa 183 begins at US 6 in the City of Council Bluffs, and travels generally northerly via the City of Crescent to the Pottawattamie‑Harrison County line approximately three miles south of the City of Missouri Valley.

Transfer of jurisdiction agreement number TJ‑183‑0(15) between the City of Council Bluffs and the Iowa Department of Transportation transferred that portion of Iowa 183 from Broadway Street (junction US 6) north to the north corporation line to city jurisdiction on October 20, 1981. Iowa 183 in Pottawattamie County and the City of Crescent remain unchanged.
