Winter Highway Maintenance

During the 2008-09 winter season, Iowa DOT maintenance crews:
  • Plowed approximately 24,500 lane miles of roadway each winter storm event, which is nearly equivalent to a trip around the earth. (The circumference of the earth at the equator is 24,902 miles.)
  • Used 219,232 tons of salt (five-year average 219,974), 40,846 tons of sand (five-year average 26,094) and 15.23 million gallons of salt brine (five-year average 12.78 million).
  • Worked 405,112 hours performing winter operations duties.
