Winter highway maintenance
During the 2011-2012 winter season, Iowa DOT maintenance crews:
- Plowed approximately 24,000 lane miles of roadway each winter storm event, which is nearly equivalent to a trip around the earth. (The circumference of the earth at the equator is 24,902 miles.)
- Used 62,381 tons of salt (five-year average 203,164), 10,658 tons of sand (five-year average 34,571) and 10.52 million gallons of salt brine (five-year average 15.48 million).
- Worked 246,060 hours performing winter operations duties.
