Rail/Highway Crossing

• Iowa has 7,310 at-grade highway-rail crossings in the state. 2,865 of those crossings are on private roads, 4,403 are on public roads. (2008)
• In 2008 there were 64 highway-rail crossing crashes in Iowa at public crossings. Of those crashes, 37 resulted in no significant injuries or fatalities.
• Since 1985, crashes at highway rail crossings have decreased by 59 percent despite the fact that rail car miles have increased by 150 percent and motor vehicle miles traveled has increased by 55 percent. (2008)
