Highway Beautification

• An average of 2,100 groups participate in Iowa's Adopt-A-Highway program each year. (2005)
• Among these groups are an estimated 19,000 volunteers who help keep 52 percent of the state's roadways litter-free. (2005)
• In 2005, volunteers collected 1,430 cubic yards of litter, and state workers collected an additional 3,264 cubic yards from the state's highways.
• Iowa DOT employees spent 1,782 hours disposing of trash picked up by Adopt-A-Highway volunteers and an additional 16,264 hours picking up litter from the roadways. (2005)
