Derailments
- In 2011 there were 45 derailments in Iowa, resulting in no fatalities.
- Of the derailments in 2011, 56 percent were caused by a problem with the track, roadbed or structures and 22 percent were attributed to human error.
- Of the derailments in 2008, 67 percent took place in yards, on sidings or on industry track.
- Though rail car traffic has dramatically increased, the number of derailments in relationship to the traffic is trending downward.
