Derailments

• In 2008 there were 53 derailments in Iowa, resulting in no injuries or fatalities.
• Of the derailments in 2008, 57 percent were caused by a problem with the track, roadbed or structures and 23 percent were attributed to human error.
• Of the derailments in 2008, 64 percent took place in yards, on sidings or on industry track.
• Since 1985, train derailments per million rail car miles have decreased by 73 percent. (2008)
