Polk County bridge replacement Iowa 17
FHWA # 040730 was constructed in 1959 and carries Iowa 17 over the Des Moines River. The 988’ x 36’ steel girder bridge carries an average of 5,200 vehicles daily across six spans. Currently, the concrete deck is classified as structurally deficient, meaning that it should be monitored and/or repaired.
The deck was overlaid with dense concrete in 1977 and is nearing the end of its service life. A project for replacing the deck is scheduled for letting on Feb. 16, 2010. This project will remove the existing concrete deck and replace it with a new one supported by the existing steel girders.
The project is estimated to cost $1,912,000.
