Butler County bridge replacement Iowa 14

FHWA # 016690 was constructed in 1952 and carries Iowa 14 over Cold Water Creek. The 152’ x 32’ steel girder bridge carries an average of 1,700 vehicles daily across three spans. Currently, the bridge abutments are classified as structurally deficient, meaning that they should be monitored and/or repaired.

The deck was overlaid with dense concrete in 1975 and is nearing the end of its service life. The barrier rail on the bridge is outdated. Repairing the extensive deterioration is a costly and time consuming task, making repair unjustifiable when compared to new construction costs. Therefore, a project for replacing the entire bridge is scheduled for letting on Nov. 17, 2009. This project will entirely remove the existing steel girder bridge and replace it with a precast, prestressed concrete beam bridge.

The project is estimated to cost $1,176,000.
