Automated Traffic Enforcement - Speed Cameras
In February 2014, administrative rules were adopted that establish requirements, procedures, and responsibilities for the use of automated traffic enforcement (ATE) systems when used on the primary road system (interstates, U.S., and Iowa routes).
These rules help ensure consistency statewide in the use of ATE systems and pertain to both fixed and mobile ATE units. The new rules create parameters and a process to help determine if an ATE system is the appropriate safety countermeasure for a given location. Local jurisdictions are required to receive Iowa DOT approval for new systems and for the continued use of existing systems.
The Iowa DOT does not have authority to own or operate any ATE system and does not receive any financial payment from any system owned or operated by a local jurisdiction.
