Limited Edition Postal Cancellation EventThe Iowa DOT hosted a special pictorial postmark cancellation event on Thursday, June 29. The event commemorated the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Federal Highway Act of 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The Act provided funding and a plan for construction of the 46,000-mile interstate highway system.
The U.S. Post Office in Ames provided a “Special Cancellation” for this event held at the Iowa Department of Transportation’s headquarters in Ames.
The limited addition cancellation was available for an additional 30 days after the event through the Ames Post Office.
After the 30-day cancellation period expired, the rubber stamps were destroyed; making the cancellation mark a true limited-edition collector’s item.
Have a great time exploring this site and learning a little bit more about Iowa's transportation history.
